Eco-Friendly Pest Control Solutions for Modern Households

While they often get the job done, harsh chemical pesticides have a lot of drawbacks. They can be just as toxic to beneficial and benign wildlife, like pollinators or natural pest removers, as they are to pests. They can also have an adverse effect on the environment as well as human health due to their toxic nature. These pesticides are also less effective as time goes by as many pests will begin to develop resistance to them, meaning you may need to employ stronger and potentially more dangerous pesticides to get results. That is why in today’s blog we will be looking at eco-friendly pest control solutions for modern homes.

Biopesticides

Biopesticides are a special type of pesticide that is derived from a natural source such as materials from plants, animals, bacteria or naturally occurring minerals. Types of Biopesticides can include Microbial Pesticides which use bacteria, fungi or viruses to target pest populations.

Mechanical Pest Control

Mechanical Pest Control measures include things like chemical free traps, fences and barriers that operate without using harsh chemical pesticides and that don’t really threaten the surrounding environment. It can also include preventive measures such as blocking off pest access to your home or yard, ensuring that there are fewer pests to deal with. Many mechanical pest control methods are also recyclable, reusable or long-lasting, so you don’t need to use new pest control materials every time.

Other solutions

Natural herbs and plants such as lavender, basil, citronella or catnip can have excellent pest repelling properties. Many of these plants can be easily grown in a home garden and then either sprinkled directly into problem areas or turned into a spray for easier deployment. Ultrasonic repellants can be used to discourage burrowing rodents in your garden. They emit high-frequency sounds and project vibrations into the ground that are extremely uncomfortable for burrowing rodents but harmless to above ground humans and pets. Diatomaceous Earth is a pest control method that involves using a special fossilized algae that dehydrates insects. It is an effective, non-toxic pest control method for ants, aphids, slugs and snails.
