Preparing Your Yard for a Pest-Free Spring and Summer
With spring on the horizon many of us are looking forward to the return of warm weather, though this unfortunately can also mean the return of pests. As soon as the weather turns around pests that have been dormant all winter will start to remerge and start looking for food and places where they can nest. In today’s blog we will be looking at how you can protect your yard from these emerging pests and enjoy a pest-free spring and summer.
Eliminate Standing Water
Standing Water can be a major breeding ground for many different types of pests though mosquitoes are the most common. Some species of mosquitoes can even lay their eggs as little as a tablespoon of water so it is important to eliminate every source of water that you can. Sources of standing water can include birdbaths that aren’t emptied and refilled regularly, unused planters filled with rainwater, clogged gutters and areas with improper drainage.
Clean up Yard Debris
Winter often leaves various forms of debris scattered around your yard and these debris piles provide perfect habitats for a wide variety of pests. Yard debris includes things like piles of old leaves and sticks, piles of firewood that have been left outside for the winter or yard composters that haven’t been emptied. By tidying up this debris you deprive pests of nesting areas and food, making your yard less attractive.
Set Traps Early
During the spring pests like wasps and ants will send out scouts to find food and places for them to build new nests. By setting traps early you can catch these scouts before they are able to report back to their hives. You might even be lucky enough to catch a queen before they start nesting in the first place, which can greatly reduce the amount of pests you need to deal with when summer rolls around.
Trim Trees and Shrubs
Overgrown trees and shrubs are great habitats for insects and rodents and in some cases can provide them with the perfect access point into your home. By keeping them well trimmed and maintained they are less attractive to pests.
