The Problem With Mice

Rumour has it, that mice stay outside in the spring and summer, but come inside during the winter to stay warm. Not true. Mice benefit from being around you all year long. Your home provides a habitat with a food source, like crumbs on the floor, and food in the cupboards they can chew into. Pooled or dripping water from old faucets or faulty gutters that drip water down walls provide something to drink, and wood piles or shrubs outside your door make perfect hiding places. Leave the door propped open for some fresh air and pronto, you have mice inside your house, no matter what the season.
Mice accomplish a surprising amount of damage to homes via their gnawing behaviour. They like to chew not only to eat, but to control the growth of their teeth and keep them sharp. That means they can chew through your walls and wiring. Damaged wires can lead to serious problems, including faulty security systems and fire hazards. When mice expose copper wiring, the hot metal can ignite if it touches a flammable surface. Mice have also been known to do considerable damage to vehicles, especially when they are stored for long periods of time. They tunnel through the seats to nest in the upholstery stuffing, and seem to love chewing on vehicle wiring as well. Mice also spread disease, such as salmonellosis, listeria and hantavirus through their droppings, urine, saliva and nesting material.
